19th Century Art

This is the Coldplay album cover, as you can see it’s been taken from Eugene Delacroix. They have also style the song Viva La Vida in the style of this painting as well as including the lyrics talking about St Peter.

Claude Monet -1872/73.

The artist has used the different paint brush strokes in an effective way by using thick darker lines to creat the shadows in the piece and meurging the pale colours amoungst one another to create the reflections effect etc. Monet has also kept the biggest parts of the piece bland where colours are concerned. He uses a eye-catching yellow to draw you into the image. I feel this works really well as the sun is the first thing you notice. It captivates your eyes and draws you in to make you look deeply into the painting. The materials he has used are oil paints and paint brushes to create this texture and style.

Jean-François Millet - The Gleaners, 1857 (Realism)

The way this image has been painted portrays a realistic photograph. Again using oil paint can create different effects, however this has been intensely worked on through layering the colours to create texture and effects. Ths also uses light and dark lighting. This helps the piece to show warmth as this image is set in a hot country. The artist has used a tiny brush to create the small flicked highlights in things such as the grass, this adds character to the piece with the small details and creates an even more realistic picture.

Theodore Gericault - 1819, The raft of medusa. (oil on canvas)

Influenced by contempary events and fuses many influences, one of which being Michelangelo.
This is an image of the captin abandoning ship whilst they leave the passengers behind. This isn’t right as the captian owes it to their passengers to stay on the boat with them and go down as they are. The whole piece is romanticised as it’s been put into a rose coloured light as the horror that should be coming from this piece isn’t being portrayed. The artist has created a dark atmosphere to portray the slightly understated carnage occuring in this painting. The passengers appear to be in the lighter shade of the piece, this suggests they are going to heaven, however the captain is in the black clouds which to me suggests that their wrong doing isn’t going to get them far. To me it represents hell and death. I belive this is one of many things the artist intentionally wanted the examiner of their work to notice.

Euegene Delacroix - Liberty Leading the People, 1830 (Realism)
This has been influnenced by contemporary events and romantised. The statue of liberty represents common folk. The young boy represents poverty and the man in the top hat behind the statue of liberty represents democracy. This was done in oil paint on canvas. The artist focuses the light onto the statue of liberty holding the french flagg. This represents the French king and the war. The statue of liberty is holding the flagg as if it were a beacon. Liberty now represents freedom and independance. The soldiers lying dead in the foreground offer poignant counterpoint to the symbolic female figure, who is illuminated triumphantly, as if in a spotlight.

Vincent Van Gogh - The Starry Night, June 1889. (Post -Impressionism)
He has used motion to convey the atmosphere and feel of the piece. He has used short brush strokes with oil paint on a canvas. the clear cut strokes blending together portray movement well in this piece. The mix of lighter and darker strokes together create a leveled contrast and make this image more effective in it’s purpose. This purpose being a dark starry night, the swils in the clouds suggest wind, therefore is creates the meant atmosphere and you can place yourself in the painting and see exactly what the artist experienced while creating this piece.

20th Century Art Movements

Jackson Pollock - 1948
By using paint to make this image he has created a a textured design that is almost child-like. However this is what makes it a good piece of artwork. The colours he has used help to show the texture and depth of the piece. With having the darker colours such as black underneath and brighter colours such as the yellow on the top this convinces the eye that the 2D canvas is leaping deeper into the material to create a 3D shape.
Salvador Dali - The Persistence of Memory, 1931.
The way that this piece has been layed creates an illusion of a puzzle as you can see the pieces but you don’t quite know where they fit togther. This makes you think about the reason behind the painting. The clocks represent time, the way they have been portrayed as melting suggests to me that time is drifting away. The contrast of light is a key part of the piece, it suggests that the sun is setting and time is almost up. The stretched face could mean that age has worn the skin too much and death is round the corner. This has been done in oil paint on canvas.
Andy Warhol - Campbell’s soup, 1968.
For this image he has use drawing, painting and print. The colours he has used help make this piece eye-catching. The Text style he has used is also another part that stands out. Andy warhol is in the pop-art style and his work was being produced after the Bauhaus movement. This could have influenced by this and portrayed it into his work.

Henri Matisse - Stanza Rossa, 1908
This is an attractive, bright and colourful piece. The light and dark colours mix together to compliment each other when they normally shouldn’t i.e. puple and red. The part of this image I like the most is the way that Matisse has devided the table cloth from the wall by adding the dark purple pattern around the table. The texture has been created through brush stroke, the image itself and colours. He has created shadows by darkening the colour and slightly changing his brush technique from dabbing to strokes.

The Movements:
-Modernism
-Post Impressionism
-Art Nouveau
-Fauvism
-Expressionism
-Cubism
-Dadaism
-Futurism
-Supermatism

The materials used in this period are mainly bright, bold acrylic type paints on a canvas or paper. In this time the main attraction was bold block colours, 3D and 2D shapes and line/block colour.

Tradional/digital art

TOM O’MALLEY by using photoshop and illustrator.
The artist has used tradional media for the base of this piece, the rough texture that has been created helps to make this piece look more attractive and eye-catching. The line textures help define parts of the image that you wouldn’t really see without. This would have been done in paint or ink with a pencil base to start with. Acrylic paint would have been used to create a brighter look and the ink has been used to soften facial features making this piece highly effective.
TOM O’MALLEY by using illustrator and photoshop.
Again this has been created by using ink and possibly acrylic paint to define texture and intensity of the background and the main piece. The bold cut out styled image is asthetically pleasing as it is original and captivating.
ALEX PHILLIPS-BROADHURST by using photoshop and illustrator.
This artist has used a combination of digital and tradional media. For details such as the texture and 3D effect they have been created on the computer. However things such as the stripes on the van have been painted on using a dark purple paint. Again this look orginal and I think it’s a well presented piece.
I like the pop art style incorperated as well as the scratchy texture that has been added into the piece.

This is a painted version (traditional media) of digital art. This has bright colours just like the other digital art images from the previous posts. Again lines sybolise the movement in the piece. The puddle of water is highly realistic compare to the rest of the image. The ultraviolet styled colours make this piece stand out and as they mix together they work well with one another. Again bolder colours represent the main part of the image.

Examples of Digital art samey-ness

This image has the samey look and effects added to it as I have recorded in previous posts. The artist has used wires/lines to symbolise movement as well as using lighting to create atmosphere. They have used bright colours to create the same pop art/digital art style and effect. The image is based around the main person in the piece, so that the main attraction of the piece is the model. The rest is just scenery.

This is another similar looking image. They have used the same techniques with contrasting light and dark to create a harsh theme which portrays the image. This is also done on photoshop and has been blended and layered as the piece seen below. These are the similarities.

As said before this is created using photoshop, the spiraling lines are one of many similar parts that people tend to used when it comes to using ditial art. Again it has the pop-art styled colours in the background and textures making it look samey and non-creative.

Digital

By TEO GKOURLIAS using Pencils, markers, paint, Photoshop.
The contrast in highlights and low lights in all of the piece help make this image stand out easily. the way the artist has made the person creating the picture look like he’s part of it makes this piece more interesting and realistic. The way in which they have presented the image makes it look more effective in alot of ways. One being the clash between cartoon styled images and more realisitic images. This makes the piece more effective.
By Derek Prospero using Creative Suite 3.

This piece has been done creatively. It is alot more original than the rest of my images. The lighting helps with the space/alien-like feel this image has. the contrasting of colour and light are used well to create a weird but intriguing style to this piece. The way this artist has blended 3 different images together is another interesting characteristic this piece posesses.

By Luisa Bernardes using Fireworks, Photoshop, After Effects, Combustion, 3ds Max, Maya
This artist has used tints to colour the male’s head. This mixed with the paint/pop-art style looks asthetically attractive as the colours compliment one another well and the theme fits to the image perfectly.

By Kyle Bean using Photoshop, After Effects, Flash.
This image manipulation is my favourite as it’s more realistic. The way this is design captivates imagination and thought as the use of everyday objects helps portray this. This is a fun and original piece.
By Dean Cook using Photoshop, Illustrator, Cinema 4D.
The light effects make this image look more bold and attractive rather than if it was the original photo. This appears to be samely to the image below which hasn’t been made by the same person. The way they have cut a smaller version of the same image and placed it so that it’s slightly off the original image creates another interesting feature in the piece.
By Nuno Aguiar using Photoshop, Illustrator, 3ds Max.
Again in this image the lighting is part of what the image shows you. It makes the highlights leap out infront of you so that you can define which part of the image the artist wants you to spot first. The colours work well together as they are all pastel colours or lighting effects. The body language of these two figures is another part that comes across almost instantly as you can see
there could either be conflict or attraction through the stances.
From looking through all of the different types of digital art from 2001-9 I have discovered that most of the pieces used bright colours and shaped lines throughout in some way. This I believe is to create more texture, asthetic interest to the piece in question.

Viral Marketing

http://www.wilsonweb.com/wmt5/viral-principles.htm

Viral marketing is basically spam mail. The ’spammer’ simply looks on the internet for it’s target audience by searching for e.g. medical doctors online and finding companies and/or individuals that they can send their viral marketing to. To make sure that at least 1 of their targets take up on the offer they repeatedly send the same email until the person(s) have given in and decide to take on the spammer.

In recent years there has been a ban on the viral marketing, the spammer can only send spam if the recipent gives them permission to do so.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Subservient_Chicken

Here’s one example of viral marketing.

The Subservient Chicken is an advertising program created to promote international fast food restaurant chain Burger King’s tender crisp chicken sandwich and their “Have it Your Way” campaign. In the ad, a man is sitting in his living room directing a person in a chicken suit to behave in any way he wants. The tag line was “Chicken the way you like it.” According to Jeff Benjamin, an Executive Creative Director at CP+B, the campaign evolved from a television idea into an interactive one. After the success of the Subservient Chicken, Burger King used the character in several subsequent advertising campaigns.

Chris Crocker is well known for his myspace and youtube videos featuring himself defending his hero Britney Spears against all the ‘haters’ of her and/or her work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Badger_Badger_Badger

This viral marketing is dancing badgers singing a repetative and addictive tune that is easily remembered. This was created using flash software, this animation is looped so that the time it runs for is litterally endless. However eventually the song seeps out of sink with the music. Accompanied by electronic music, a voice repeats the word “badger” over the animation, breaking off to say either “mushroom” or “a snake” at the appropriate moments.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dancing_Banana#Peanut_Butter_Jelly_Time

As the popularity of the banana grew, hundreds of variations of the image had been created for forums or other purposes. The Dancing Banana soon made its way to television shows and began to appear as an icon in pop culture. - The viral marketing was spread so that more advertising was feasible throughout the internet, tv etc.

The nervous system by David Rokeby is an inspirational musical piece created by movement using interactive sound installations which Rokeby has created. For this he has used video cameras, image processors, computers, synthesizers and a sound system to create a space where you can use any movements and it creates sound/music as you create bigger or smaller dynamic movement.

Insyde by Airside
The imagery for this piece is only made purely from quater circles. The bright colours help the imagery colourful, attractuve and interesting. The theme is well presented by different background colours and pop art styles. This helps to broaden the mind of an artist by showing them how much technology has developed over the years.

Digital Movement - 21st Centry art

This image was created by ALAN CAMPBELL by using Photoshop and illustrator as his software. This is bright, colourful and partly realistic.

This is also Danis Sie. Again he has used photoshop, Illustrator and painter. This is asethitically attractive because it has texture and the variety of space, contrasts of light and dark and also the Illusion it gives off.

This image was created by DANIS SIE using Photoshop, Painter and Illustrator as his software.
Sie takes photographs for reference with his Canon 350D and then uses Photoshop and Illustrator to add effects. This looks interesting as he has used black and white which represents past or the bleakness of the piece and the way he has used the lighting helps the ammount of impact you get from looking at this image.
This image was done by João Oliveira using Photoshop, Illustrator, Maya.retro futuristic mixture, mixing vintage, electro and classical aesthetics in a single experimental piece. This image is surrealist work, it’s asthetically pleasing because it’s imaginative, original and the idea of space and metal works well and compliments one another.
