20th Century Art Movements
Salvador Dali – The Persistence of Memory, 1931.The way that this piece has been layed creates an illusion of a puzzle as you can see the pieces but you don’t quite know where they fit togther. This makes you think about the reason behind the painting. The clocks represent time, the way they have been portrayed as melting suggests to me that time is drifting away. The contrast of light is a key part of the piece, it suggests that the sun is setting and time is almost up. The stretched face could mean that age has worn the skin too much and death is round the corner. This has been done in oil paint on canvas.
Andy Warhol – Campbell’s soup, 1968.For this image he has use drawing, painting and print. The colours he has used help make this piece eye-catching. The Text style he has used is also another part that stands out. Andy warhol is in the pop-art style and his work was being produced after the Bauhaus movement. This could have influenced by this and portrayed it into his work.
Henri Matisse – Stanza Rossa, 1908
This is an attractive, bright and colourful piece. The light and dark colours mix together to compliment each other when they normally shouldn’t i.e. puple and red. The part of this image I like the most is the way that Matisse has devided the table cloth from the wall by adding the dark purple pattern around the table. The texture has been created through brush stroke, the image itself and colours. He has created shadows by darkening the colour and slightly changing his brush technique from dabbing to strokes.
The Movements:

The materials used in this period are mainly bright, bold acrylic type paints on a canvas or paper. In this time the main attraction was bold block colours, 3D and 2D shapes and line/block colour.
