19th Century Art

This is the Coldplay album cover, as you can see it’s been taken from Eugene Delacroix. They have also style the song Viva La Vida in the style of this painting as well as including the lyrics talking about St Peter.

Claude Monet -1872/73.

The artist has used the different paint brush strokes in an effective way by using thick darker lines to creat the shadows in the piece and meurging the pale colours amoungst one another to create the reflections effect etc. Monet has also kept the biggest parts of the piece bland where colours are concerned. He uses a eye-catching yellow to draw you into the image. I feel this works really well as the sun is the first thing you notice. It captivates your eyes and draws you in to make you look deeply into the painting. The materials he has used are oil paints and paint brushes to create this texture and style.

Jean-François Millet – The Gleaners, 1857 (Realism)

The way this image has been painted portrays a realistic photograph. Again using oil paint can create different effects, however this has been intensely worked on through layering the colours to create texture and effects. Ths also uses light and dark lighting. This helps the piece to show warmth as this image is set in a hot country. The artist has used a tiny brush to create the small flicked highlights in things such as the grass, this adds character to the piece with the small details and creates an even more realistic picture.

Theodore Gericault – 1819, The raft of medusa. (oil on canvas)

Influenced by contempary events and fuses many influences, one of which being Michelangelo.
This is an image of the captin abandoning ship whilst they leave the passengers behind. This isn’t right as the captian owes it to their passengers to stay on the boat with them and go down as they are. The whole piece is romanticised as it’s been put into a rose coloured light as the horror that should be coming from this piece isn’t being portrayed. The artist has created a dark atmosphere to portray the slightly understated carnage occuring in this painting. The passengers appear to be in the lighter shade of the piece, this suggests they are going to heaven, however the captain is in the black clouds which to me suggests that their wrong doing isn’t going to get them far. To me it represents hell and death. I belive this is one of many things the artist intentionally wanted the examiner of their work to notice.

Euegene Delacroix – Liberty Leading the People, 1830 (Realism)
This has been influnenced by contemporary events and romantised. The statue of liberty represents common folk. The young boy represents poverty and the man in the top hat behind the statue of liberty represents democracy. This was done in oil paint on canvas. The artist focuses the light onto the statue of liberty holding the french flagg. This represents the French king and the war. The statue of liberty is holding the flagg as if it were a beacon. Liberty now represents freedom and independance. The soldiers lying dead in the foreground offer poignant counterpoint to the symbolic female figure, who is illuminated triumphantly, as if in a spotlight.

Vincent Van Gogh – The Starry Night, June 1889. (Post -Impressionism)
He has used motion to convey the atmosphere and feel of the piece. He has used short brush strokes with oil paint on a canvas. the clear cut strokes blending together portray movement well in this piece. The mix of lighter and darker strokes together create a leveled contrast and make this image more effective in it’s purpose. This purpose being a dark starry night, the swils in the clouds suggest wind, therefore is creates the meant atmosphere and you can place yourself in the painting and see exactly what the artist experienced while creating this piece.
